WE INVEST IN A BROAD RANGE

Natural Phospholipids

Lipoid offers a broad range of high quality phospholipids manufactured in cGMP and ISO 9001:2008 certified facilities. The product portfolio includes natural phospholipid fractions which are rich in phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylinositol, glycerophosphocholine, phosphatidic acid and sphingomyelin. Hydrogenated, synthetic and PEGylated phospholipids complete the product range.

Phospholipids are the active components of lecithins and indicate phosphorus containing lipids, glycolipids and sphingolipids. Glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids are essential building-blocks of all living cell membranes. Lecithin fractions that contain no less than 80% phospholipids are referred to as phospholipids. Phospholipids with an amount of 80% or more of a chemically defined entity are identified by their specific names, e.g. phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylinositol (PI), glycerophosphocholine (GPC) and phosphatidic acid (PA).

Among various phospholipids in lecithin, the most important one is phosphatidylcholine (PC). Phosphatidylcholine is a zwitterionic molecule without net charge at pH 7. Due to its unique structure, it acts as a multifunctional excipient in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, or dietetic formulations.

PC extracted from natural sources like soybeans, sunflower, or egg yolk comprises saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. PC is a source of choline, and particularly soybean PC is a rich source of linoleic acid. Synthetic PCs with a well-defined, predetermined fatty acid composition are made from ultrapure natural PC followed by enzymatic modification steps.

Unsaturated phospholipids can be converted into saturated phospholipids by hydrogenation. Hydrogenated phospholipids are versatile excipients for parenteral, oral, and topical applications (e.g. as emulsifiers, dispersants, or liposome builders). Such phospholipids have a higher transition temperature (i.e., the chain melting temperature of the fatty acids’ hydrocarbon chains) compared to their unsaturated counterparts and are therefore suitable to stabilize liposomes. In dermal formulations based on O/W emulsions, hydrogenated phosphatidylcholine forms lamellar structures mimicking the lamellae of the natural skin barrier.

    Hydrogenated Soybean Phospholipids
Starting from crude soybean lecithin, purified hydrogenated soybean phospholipids can serve manifold functions in pharmaceutical or cosmetic applications. Products are also available in non-GMO quality.

    Hydrogenated Sunflower Phospholipids
Sunflower-derived hydrogenated phospholipids are an excellent alternative for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. These non-GMO plant-derived products meet the high standards set for sustainable natural products.

    Hydrogenated Egg Phospholipids
Egg phospholipids are highly purified fractions obtained from hen egg yolk. Hydrogenated egg phospholipids are suitable for parenteral, topical, or oral applications.
