Pharmaceutical Applications

Phospholipids, the significant components of lecithin, are endogenous components of the human body that are biocompatible, biodegradable, and safe. The WHO states that there is no Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) limit for the oral use of lecithin. Given parenterally, phospholipids show no toxic effects. That makes them suitable for many routes of administration. Hence, phospholipids are versatile excipients, without concerns regarding additional possible excipient-related toxicity.

Phospholipids can be applied in liquid (e.g. emulsions, liposomes, lipid nanoparticles, and micelles), solid, and semi solid dosage forms. They are used, for instance, as liposome formers, emulsifiers, components in mixed micelles, wetting agents, and as technical aids.

The US FDA assigns GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for lecithin. Monographs are available in important pharmacopeias (e.g. USP, EP, or JP). In addition, Lipoid also offers numerous Drug Master Files (DMF) for its products. For additional information please contact info@lipoid.com.
